Winning Hearts and Minds One Water Bottle at a Time

30 11 2006

I’m going to show you a video that’s going to make you pretty angry. It’s not gory or violent, but it’s cruel and sad.

But first: I realize war is rough shit, and that we have a lot of good soldiers fighting this stupid, ill-conceived and counterproductive war. I also realize we see the bad guys a lot more than the good guys.

Marine One Mechanic Goes Missing

30 11 2006

Sometimes the best little stories fall under the radar - apparently one of the Marine staff sergeants that travel with the President went “missing” during the recent Vietnam trip.

Charlottesville, VA

29 11 2006

Cheers from the warm and friendly town of Charlottesville, Virginia. A friend recommended I check the place out, and I am already glad I did.

Tapas in Bethesda

29 11 2006

While I thoroughly enjoyed my evening with Chris and Monique, I should have spent the night there in Bethesda.

NYC area

28 11 2006

After spending a couple of days up home in Maine reconnecting with friends and family, I made my way down to the Southern CT/NYC area for a few days. I went to the Mohegan Sun casino with the lovely Deanna, where she cautiously played craps as I watched, then excitedly cheered me on as I lost large amounts of money in high-limit slot machines. Ah, how fun it can be to be slowly bled.

I’m Alive

27 11 2006

I’m alive and well despite some wounds received at the Mohegan Sun casino. I am about to depart New England - and here in Stamford, CT it is a gorgeous, sunny 62 degrees. The plan is to hit a party in NYC tonight, then probably move out of there rather quickly.

A technical issue has prevented me from filing a more regular update; I hope that will be fixed shortly.

Culture Shock

18 11 2006

You want culture shock? Walk the Champs-Elysées in Paris - then visit Target in Revere, Massachusetts in the same 24-hour period.

Paris and more Paris

18 11 2006

As I said, Paris is delightful. Have spent a couple more days exploring and soaking the place up, and am headed back to the US shortly. A wonderful time all around - and lots of lessons learned for next time - I’ll be sharing those soon.

Paris, my darling

15 11 2006

It was a busy day. First of all, I’ve done something horrible to my right leg and it really hurts. Can’t quite figure out what, but it’s like a knot in my leg muscle that actually has me limping around like a senior citizen. So, send a prayer up for me, would ya?

Paris

Oh Paris, sweet Paris. More about her later; what a beauty.

A few pictures from last night and today are now up.

Train to Paris

14 11 2006

First of all, this train scene is bullshit. The compartments are evenly divided among smoking and non-smoking, which I think is unfair. One could be forgiven for thinking that all Europeans smoke, because there seems to be smoking just about everywhere. I saw folks smoking in a sushi restaurant in Amsterdam and remember thinking, how can you taste the sushi?

Anyway, I choose a smoking compartment because the non-smoking compartments are stuffed full, and I’m hoping to spread out and get some writing done. I am listening to my iPod as I settle in.

Budapest Explorations

12 11 2006

The last couple of days around Budapest have been interesting in both good and bad ways. Overall, while I’ve seen some great sights and learned a lot, I’ve not enjoyed Budapest as much as my other destinations thus far. Hassles have been a bit easier to come by, I’ve felt hustled more than once, and while I’ve encountered some warm and gracious people, I’ve also encountered quite a few who could give substantially less than a shit.

House of Terror

12 11 2006

Today I visited Budapest’s House of Terror. For decades, this was the location where many who were seen as “disloyal” to the regime were imprisoned, tortured, and killed. Many party operations were conducted from the building (both the Arrow Cross and the Communists.) It was then called the “House of Loyalty.”

Train to Budapest

11 11 2006

Last night, i decided I would take a train to Budapest in the morning. The plan was to get up early and check the train schedules online. My hotel was one of the very few who offered free Internet access in my hotel room, a nice luxury. But of course when i awoke, the Internet access was down. Oh well, I’ll give it a little time… took a shower, went downstairs for breakfast, and returned to my room to prepare for check-out. Tried the ‘net again, no deal.

Bratislava

10 11 2006

After some inner debate, I decided to take a day trip from Vienna into Bratislava, Slovakia. It would be my first time behind the old “iron curtain,” and I was excited. I took a mid-day train out of Vienna and as we went along I decided to try to snap a few photos out the train window. It’s basically impossible to shoot a decent photograph through a train window because of the interior reflections, but this train had upper windows that slid down. Since there was no one near me who would be bothered by it, I slid the window down and began gawking out and snapped a couple of shots.

New Vienna Pix

9 11 2006

A quick photoset from my walk-around yesterday.

Vienna Ventures

9 11 2006

Over the last couple of days I’ve done a lot of walking around Vienna. I visited the Kunsthistoriches Museum, MUMOK, Albertina and KunstHaus Wein. Toured Hofburg and, among other things, learned how neat Empress SiSi was (we’ll talk about her coked-out, obsessive ass later.) Vienna is neat - real culture, an interesting place historically, plenty of things to see and do. The people are friendly, if a bit formal. I’m enjoying my time here, but am eager to move east. On that note, I am considering a day trip to Bratislava, Slovakia tomorrow, which would be my first time behind the old “iron curtain.”
