30 11 2006I’m going to show you a video that’s going to make you pretty angry. It’s not gory or violent, but it’s cruel and sad.
But first: I realize war is rough shit, and that we have a lot of good soldiers fighting this stupid, ill-conceived and counterproductive war. I also realize we see the bad guys a lot more than the good guys.
Having said that - why is it counterproductive? Well, there are macro answers and there are micro answers.
The macro answers are that we are increasingly seen as the world’s great antagonists; the planet’s imperialists. The short-sighted, ignorant, overreaching cowboys. It says something not-very-good about us that we would support this war and reelect an administration that used treasonous lies to justify it - a fool’s errand that has ruined hundreds of thousands of lives and set us backwards, in global goodwill, by at least a generation.
The micro reasons are many - but one might be the cruel, ignorant jackasses on the front lines who are doing their part to ruin the image of America a few Iraqi children at a time.
Liberators? God help us.

go ahead. judge the actions of a soldier in a far away, hostile country, from the comfort of your living rooms.
damn right i’m going to judge them from the comfort of my living room; i’m a bit more concerned about kids who’re so desperate for water they go running after a truck for blocks and blocks, from the comfort of my living room; i never wanted this war, and said so, in the streets and in letters, from the comfort of my living room; this war is costing billions of dollars and untold lives, for no reason, which i can see even from the comfort of my living room; and i feel for the poor bastards who, because of of people like you, who mindlessly “support our troops,” even Ik-like sadistic monsters like this, from the comfort of YOUR living room…no longer have any living room.
