NASA’s Phoenix has completed its 422 million mile journey, successfully executed its extremely tricky EDL (entry, descent, and landing) sequence, and is safely on the ground on Mars. It is now communicating with NASA at eight megabits per second and preparing to be the first earthly probe to dig below the Martian soil for life. Amazing shit.

Says  “it will be deeper and last longer than many think.“

Motorists say it’ll take another buck a gallon. Don’t worry, we won’t have to wait long.

We have heard all the chatter about her being delusional, that there’s no real path for her to the nomination, and her main reason for holding out is to have some negotiating power leading to the convention. There’s been endless speculation about her motives.

But her statement today about why she’s staying in the race really is a stunner. I thought she had really plumbed the depths when she talked recently about her superior support among “hardworking white Americans” [e.g. ignorant, racist hicks; see also: the WV primaries].

But this is a new low. Today, Senator Clinton said,

“My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California.”

So, there’s the logic! She needs to stay in because of her superior skills at ducking sniper fire!

I have found a cozy, warm, optimistic place in my mind where what she was trying to say was: things can change – sometimes dramatically – late in the primary season, and she just picked a really bad example. But, given the legitimate security concerns for Obama that most of us haven’t even dared talk about – and given that nothing coming out of Hillary Clinton’s mouth is uncalculated, these comments are crass at best.

She has been appealing to voter’s fears throughout the campaign (he’s black! he’s young! he might get shot! at three in the morning!), and it’s time for her to apologize and go away. It’s a sad note on which to end her campaign, but this will surely mark its low point, and almost certainly its terminus.
